Oil and Water by Lara Ann Dominick

I absolutely love vampires and vampire stories, so I had high expectations for Oil and Water, and it did not let me down in the slightest.

The 2 protagonists are Elsie, a human who has a particularly ordinary life. Lives at home with her parents, occasionally meets up with her solid circle of friends, and has an unstable relationship to boot.
And Opal, a powerful vampire who has no recollection of her prior life and thus has no compassion or regard for human life.

The story starts out at a slow to moderate pace, bringing you into their lives. And you could be forgiven for thinking you are about to read an average, not too riveting vampire story but it does gradually build up until you find yourself being pulled deeper and deeper as the chapters progress and the story unfolds. And although It was pretty obvious from the beginning, that the lives of the two main characters would cross paths, the way that they did, I was not expecting. And once I reached that point I was completely hooked.

Another character featured in the story is Cy, the love interest of Elsie but someone who you learn also has a dark past. Cy started out as a pretty mysterious character but he soon became highly lovable due to his calm and collected demeanour, even in his dark moments.

Then there was, of course, the villain, Amber. Who starts out as Opal’s companion but as the story progresses she takes a wild twist and becomes one of the craziest villains I have met, and I mean that in a good way. And even though her actions are outright evil, there’s almost a part of you who understands her and hopes she can be rehabilitated.

I like the tone the story is written in. It’s really natural and easy to follow and gives the whole story a very personal feel to the point that you feel as though you are a part of the story as it happens.

If you like vampire stories then you cannot miss out on this one. I honestly don’t think you will be disappointed. Even if you just love a good old thriller this is great too!
